I feel like I wouldn't be doing my Scots-Irish heritage justice without mentioning the famous Americans who are of Scots-Irish ancestry. We have had 16 US presidents who share that heritage: Andrew Jackson (7th), James Polk (11th), James Buchanan (15th), Andrew Johnson (17th), Ulysses S. Grant (18th), Chester A. Arthur (21st), Grover Cleveland (22nd & 24th), Benjamin Harrison (23rd), William McKinley (25th), Theodore Roosevelt (26th), Woodrow Wilson (28th), Harry Truman (33rd), Dwight D. Eisenhower (34th), Richard Nixon (37th), Ronald Reagan (40th), and Bill Clinton (42nd). (Wikipedia, 2013)
According to Jim Webb (2004), the Scots-Irish formed the bulk of the Confederate Army and a good part of the Union Army as well, and even in later wars provided many of the greatest generals and soldiers our nation has ever seen: Stonewall Jackson, Sam Houston, Nathan Bedford Forrest, Ulysses S. Grant, George S. Patton, Sgt. Alvin York, David Hackworth, and Senator Jim Webb himself (whom he doesn't mention). Mention should also be made of J.E.B. Stuart.
Some famous political figures who weren't presidents or fighters: Davie Crockett, John Dunlapp, John J. Kennedy (Republic of Texas), Charles Thompson (Revolutionary politician), John McCain, James White (frontiersman, father of Knoxvile, TN), and James S. Rollins (Politician, Father of the University of Missouri) (Webb, 2004).
Famous writers include: Cork Graham, Stephen King, John Steinbeck, David McCullough, Edgar Allen Poe, Mark Twain (Wikipedia, 2013),as well as Mark Twain, Howrace Greely, Edgar Allen Poe, Margaret Mitchell, and Larry McMurtry. Their style of folklore became one of the truest American art forms (Webb, 2004).
Some famous musicians: Johnny Cash, George Jones, Eddie Cochran, Eminem, Crystal Gayle, Merle Haggard, Loretta Lynn, Reba McEntire, Elvis Presley, Charlie Pride, Ricky Skaggs, and Hank Williams (Wikipedia, 2013).
"They brought us a horde of thespians, including Tallulah Bankhead, Ava Gardner, Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne, Robert Redford and George C. Scott" (Webb, 2004).
Others that share the Scots-Irish heritage worth mentioning: Bill Gates, Neil Armstrong, Kit Carson, James Irwin, Andrew Mellon, Rev. Francis Makemie, and Timothy Eaton (Webb, 2004).
"... it is doubtful if we have wholly realised the importance of the part played by that stern and virile people... the men who had followed
Cromwell, and who had shared in the defence of Derry, and before any other declared for American Independence" (Roosevelt, as cited in Wilcher, 2007).
